Everyone of us know this kid. In fact, every childhood memory you have includes that one kid in your school you grew up in, everyone knew was the school yard bully. You know the type; the one who threatened to beat you to a pulp if you didn’t hand over your lunch money or the one who promised to tell the entire school you still sleep with a teddy bear if you didn’t do their homework for them! Bullies!!
My story is a bit different just because I was born a bit different. Instantly I was singled out as the one others chose to pick on. Thankfully it didn’t last that long due to a teacher by the name of Mr. Jenkins. In the 4th grade he made a major difference in my life and I am very grateful for his insight, wisdom and concern.
However, not every child is blessed to have a Mr. Jenkins in their life. There are kids, it may be some of you that are reading this right now or it may be your children that are going through being bullied on a regular basis, that daily deal with being pushed around because they are different than the other kids on the playground. I will admit that some of the most damaging experiences happen in the formative years of our youth and if they are not properly dealt with can linger for years to come.
This is why I speak consistently into the lives of students. I know the feelings that come with being picked on, misunderstood, singled out – the list can go on and on. This is also why I recently formed a non-profit called ThumbUp Foundation so that I and others like me, can help families and children/youth that are born with disabilities, overcome the stigma of being different. TUF has been formed to educate, assist and motivate those that experience the pain of being singled out just because of a birth defect.
Many of you know my story and you know that the path to overcoming whatever may be stopping someone, is the path I call attitude. “Your attitude determines your direction and direction is more important than speed.” I can’t control others perception of me but I can control how I perceive what I have been “handed” in my life. The problem arises when there is no one to help guide and direct that attitude in the direction of success. This is one of the primary purposes of the ThumbUp Foundation. This foundation exists to help others overcome their differences and we do it by supporting families, by educating and training those affected, and by providing resources that inspire and motivate.
This is why I am not afraid to ask for your help. 1 out of every 1200 births are affected by the condition I was born with, which is called Amniotic Band Syndrome. I want you to be a part of this opportunity that is going to make a huge difference in the lives of those affected by Amniotic Band Syndrome. There is needs to be a source of positive reinforcement available in this age that is filled with more than just school yard antics. We have students and teenagers that are cyber bullied, threatened and forgotten all because they may be somewhat different than the rest. If you would like to be a part of this world-changing endeavor please follow the link below to learn more. No gift is too small. I am so thankful for those that have already helped by donating to this worthy cause which is going to help get the message of ThumbUp Foundation out there.

HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Today I return home after being with a group of students, who gathered in Salt Lake City, that were from the states of Montana, Wyoming and Utah. I spoke at a youth conference they put on each year and it was a pretty awesome time. I have been extremely privileged over the last 20+ years to speak to thousands of students and each time I do so I go away encouraged that God is raising up some awesome young people in this generation.
Popular culture would have us believe that this generation has no hope and things look bleak on the horizon of their lives, but I would beg to differ. There has never been a more talented, gifted and “willing to make an impact” generation than the one that is currently on the scene.
Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:12
Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. (NLT)
This got me to thinking about this generation of youth and what Paul meant when he said “don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young?” In my mind, looking back on my youth (which really wasn’t that long ago LOL), I began thinking of a few areas I could talk about that I think the youth of this generation should consider.

It is hard to believe that we are rapidly closing out another summer and schools across the nation are going back into session. Seems like yesterday they were just getting out. My kids still have another week but it will be here before you know it. It has been an eventful summer for the Sargent clan. This past week we dropped our oldest off at college and that was not an easy thing at all. We are excited for him but it sure is quiet around the house now!
I wanted to give you an opportunity to get some resources that I know will help you this upcoming school year. One is FREE, one is my latest book and the other is a 5 week series I recently published for Student Pastors and youth workers to teach to their students at the beginning of this school year. Check them out:
Rule of Thumb: Why Accept Average?
I know life is busy. We are all busy and sometimes in the busyness of life we lose sight of the things that truly matter. I wanted to write this ebook as a challenge to go beyond the norm. To be more than just status quo. I think you will find in the short pages of my ebook “Rule of Thumb: Why Accept Average?”, a guide to living life on purpose. It is by no means a thorough thesis on the meaning of life but I think it will provide some direction that may be needed in the journey this school year. You can’t buy Rule of Thumb in a bookstore. You can only get it by subscribing to my blog because it is FREE!! Just enter name and email in the right hand corner of this page to subscribe and you can download it.
The HandBook: Five Forces To Form Your Future
With school starting back I have priced The HandBook ebook edition at only $2.99 and the paperback edition at $9.99, because I believe the five forces I discuss in the book can help every family and student that reads it. Several have mentioned how much The HandBook has impacted them and you can read those reviews by clicking HERE.
Every youth worker faces the challenge of trying to impart principles within the heart of your students, that will help them become successful young people in the midst of our challenging and shifting culture. Although resources abound for student ministry leaders, they often do not deal with the heart of what your students are facing. This is why I wrote the “Be APPtitudes: Five Life Applications Every Student Needs” and I am excited to announce the launch of this brand new student series.
Last week I posted two pictures of a new design for my soon to be launched student series called, “The Be APPtitudes.” The response was awesome and the popular choice for the design was overwhelmingly agreed upon. I want to thank everyone who posted, shared, commented, emailed and took part in helping me choose the right design for this product.
I also want to give s special shout-out to the graphical genius who came up with this concept for The Be APPtitudes. David McGovern is a phenomenal graphic designer. David and his wife Monique, along with their 3 daughters, are building a great church in Glendale, Ca called Angeles Church. Do yourself a favor and check out what David & Monique are doing at Angeles Church and get involved in helping them in this awesome church plant.
Now back to our regular scheduled program! Below is the design that was chosen by the masses!!! Thanks again for giving me some feedback. I really appreciate it and I look forward to the impact that The Be APPtitudes will have on youth around the nation. Stay tuned…. You will be hearing more on the final launch date soon (it will be next week). If you would like to get an advance word on the availability and purchase of The Be APPtitudes, make sure and subscribe to my blog. Plus you get FREE stuff just for doing so. You can’t beat that! Just put your name and email in the box on the right hand corner of the page. Thanks again for helping me out. You guys are the greatest.
OK! Here we go:
AND THE WINNER IS – – – – – (drum roll please)
Over the last week I have been informing you of a brand new youth and young adult series, called The Be APPtitudes, that I will be releasing very soon. I have worked with students for over 25 years now and I have noticed 5 key concepts needed in the life of a young person/young adult that The Be APPtitudes addresses. I think this series will resonate with those you are investing in each week.
The Be APPtitudes series sets out to define these concepts or “APPlications” in such a way that it will leave your students realizing who they are and what they are capable of doing. I can’t wait for you to get your hands on this series. I am already getting feedback from youth pastors and young adult leaders that are anxiously awaiting to teach these 5 lessons. Stay tuned and keep checking back in – the series will be launched very soon.
I wanted to get your feedback on the design of The Be APPtitudes. I’ve recently sent some of this to my subscribers and have already received some insightful feedback, but I wanted to get your opinion on which design you like best for this series. These are the two that seem to be the most popular so I am including them in this post for you to comment on or Email me what you think looks best.
We will simply call them DESIGN A and DESIGN B. Please email me or leave me a comment below on which design you like best. Ok here we go:
Thanks so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it.
